Yonkers Sets Curfew for Minors on Halloween Night

Kids under 16 will have to be home by set times under a new city curfew. Violators face a $25 fine.

Key points

  • The curfew applies to minors under 16 on Halloween night, Saturday the 31st.
  • Times vary by age: 10:00 p.m. for 11 and under, 10:30 p.m. for ages 12 and 13, and 11:00 p.m. for ages 14 to 16.
  • The fine for violating the curfew is $25, according to the city's Municipal Code.
  • Thousands of Dominican families live in Yonkers.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano announced that police will enforce a curfew for minors under 16 on Halloween night, Saturday, October 31. The measure comes in a city where thousands of Dominican families and families of other backgrounds live.

Under the Municipal Code, children aged 11 or younger must be home by 10:00 p.m. Those aged 12 and 13 must be home by 10:30 p.m., and those aged 14 to 16 by 11:00 p.m. Anyone who violates the rule will pay a $25 fine.

There are exceptions. Minors may be out if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. They may also run an errand with parental permission, with prior notice to the Police Department's Community Affairs Division at 914-377-7293. In addition, young people may stay out until 12:30 a.m. Half an hour after school ends, or for religious activities and volunteer public events, unless the host organization notifies police 24 hours in advance.

Minors who break the curfew will be taken to the nearest police station, and their parents or legal guardians will be notified. For more information, call the Police Department at 914-377-7923.

Police Commissioner Christopher Sapienza said officers will be present throughout Yonkers on Halloween night to help ensure a safe evening for everyone.

Why it matters

If you have children under 16 in Yonkers, you will need to plan Halloween night around the curfew times to avoid fines and having your child taken to the police station.
