Foreign Minister Víctor Bisonó called in Madrid for more joint initiatives with observer countries of the Ibero-American Conference.

Key points

  • The proposal covers academic mobility, food security, digital transformation, disaster risk reduction and social protection.
  • Víctor -Ito- Bisonó presented it at the Dialogue with Associate and Consultative Observers in Madrid.
  • Angola, India, Turkey and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) were welcomed as new observers.

The Dominican Republic proposed expanding its cooperation with the countries and observer bodies of the Ibero-American Conference. The initiative seeks concrete projects in academic mobility, food security, digital transformation, disaster risk reduction and social protection.

The proposal was presented by Foreign Minister Víctor -Ito- Bisonó during the Dialogue with Associate and Consultative Observers of the Ibero-American Conference. The meeting took place in Madrid, Spain, as part of the 30th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government.

According to the MIREX statement, Bisonó said the experience and capabilities of observers add substantial value in each of those areas. For that reason, he said, efforts must continue to pave the way for observers to participate more actively and in a coordinated manner in cooperation initiatives.

The foreign minister also called for stronger communication and coordination channels between Ibero-American countries and observers, so that their programs align with the proposals to be approved by the heads of state and government at the Summit.

During the meeting, the Dominican Republic welcomed the incorporation of Angola, India and Turkey as Associate Observers, as well as the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) as a Consultative Observer. According to the Dominican government, these accessions show growing international interest in the Ibero-American space as a platform for dialogue, cooperation and consensus-building.

The Dialogue with Associate and Consultative Observers strengthens ties with states and international bodies that are not among the 22 member countries but contribute to the goals and priorities of the Ibero-American Community.

The Dominican participation is part of the foreign minister's agenda in Spain, aimed at promoting cooperation, investment and trade opportunities and strengthening the country's presence in Ibero-American forums for dialogue and consensus-building.

Why it matters

If the cooperation moves forward, it could open more study, investment and trade programs for Dominicans both at home and abroad.
