Dominican Consumer Agency Shuts Eight Chinese Stores in Greater Santo Domingo Over Violations

Eight Chinese businesses in Greater Santo Domingo have been shut down for violations that affect consumers.

Key points

  • Eight businesses were temporarily closed by Pro Consumidor.
  • Violations include products without health registrations and adult items displayed where minors could see them.
  • The closures will remain until the Attorney General's Office completes its investigation.
  • The stores are located in Pantoja, Los Alcarrizos and other areas of Greater Santo Domingo.

The National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor) closed eight Chinese establishments after detecting violations during inspections carried out by its technicians and inspectors.

The closed businesses include Home Plus, AMG Mall, Plaza Neza, Tienda Rojo Star, Tienda Nuevo Mundo, Import and Export, Sol, Playa y Arena, among others. The stores are located in the Pantoja municipal district, in Los Alcarrizos and in other areas of Greater Santo Domingo.

According to the agency's director, Eddy Alcántara, the temporary closures were ordered through resolutions 1934-26 and 1935-26. Among the violations cited is the sale of products without the required health registrations. Adult items with special characteristics were also found displayed where minors could see them, a situation that could violate the Code for the System of Protection and the Fundamental Rights of Children and Adolescents.

Alcántara explained that the closures followed a review of the violations identified during the inspections and evaluations by the Executive Directorate and specialized technical staff. He recalled that the agency had already intervened other Chinese establishments and that, once the evaluations concluded, it would take the necessary administrative measures where violations were confirmed.

The resolutions state that the closures will remain in effect until the Attorney General's Office concludes its investigation, to which the agency will refer the case.

The head of Pro Consumidor said the agency will continue enforcing the rules that protect consumers, especially against commercial practices that could put their safety, health and rights at risk.

Why it matters

If you shop at these stores, products without health registrations can pose risks to your health and safety. The measure aims to protect consumers and minors.
