Carolina Mejía, mayor of the National District and presidential hopeful for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), called on Tuesday for wider opportunities for Dominican products to reach the Spanish market. She made the remarks at the opening of the III Dominican Week in Spain (SEDE), held in Madrid.
In her speech, Mejía said Dominican companies should be able to forge new trade partnerships and take advantage of exchanges with Spain. "We want more and more Dominican products to reach the Spanish market, for our companies to find new partners, and for the economic ties between our countries to keep strengthening," she said.
The candidate noted that in 2025 Spain became the main source of foreign direct investment in the Dominican Republic, with more than US$1,086 million. Mejía said that investment reflects confidence in the country and a contribution to the development of thousands of Dominican families.
Mejía argued that stronger economic ties should translate into jobs, greater opportunities and better living conditions. She also highlighted Spain's contributions to strategic sectors, as well as to education, institutional strengthening and sustainable development.
The III Dominican Week in Spain runs for four days and brings together officials and business representatives from both countries to promote trade, investment and cooperation. The event is presided over by businessman Manuel García Troncoso. Foreign Minister Víctor "Ito" Bisonó and José Maldonado Stark, the event's vice president, also spoke at the opening ceremony.
Mejía's agenda continues Wednesday in Barcelona, where she will take part in Smart City Barcelona and hold institutional meetings, including one with Anne Hidalgo. She will then return to Madrid to meet with members of her political team. Her agenda will conclude Friday with a business meeting organized by SEDE and the Consejo Empresarial Alianza por Iberoamérica (CEAPI), where President Luis Abinader is scheduled to take part.
Why it matters
Greater trade and investment with Spain could translate into jobs and opportunities for Dominican families, as the candidate herself argued.
