The government has opened a covered sports and community venue in Tireo al Medio, backed by a RD$22.6 million investment. The space will be used for much more than sports.

Key points

  • RD$22,600,000 investment in the multipurpose covered venue in Tireo al Medio, La Vega.
  • The space hosts basketball and volleyball, and also weddings, birthdays and religious gatherings.
  • FIBA-certified backboards, synthetic flooring, and upgrades to bleachers, bathrooms and electrical system.
  • Tireo al Medio was upgraded to a municipality earlier last year.

Sports Minister Kelvin Cruz inaugurated a multipurpose covered venue in Tireo al Medio, in La Vega province, on Sunday, with an investment of RD$22,600,000. The facility is designed for a range of sports and community activities.

The venue has space for basketball and volleyball. According to the Ministry, the project will have a positive impact on young athletes, community leaders and social groups in nearby areas.

The work included synthetic flooring in the playing area, specialized scoreboards and backboard supports for professional boards certified by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), as well as posts and a volleyball net. Bleachers, mixed-use restrooms, the electrical system, the perimeter fence and the metal roof structure were also upgraded, and the exterior area was beautified.

Cruz said the multipurpose space can also be used for weddings, birthday parties and religious gatherings. "This is a day of great joy for this community," the minister said, adding that the venue will benefit the entire population.

The minister recalled that the government elevated Tireo al Medio to municipality status earlier last year. The town is considered the country's main agricultural garden. He thanked President Luis Abinader, whom he called the true driving force behind the project, and said the government has been paying off "sports debts" by building facilities across the country.

Attending the event were Sports Vice Ministers Kennedy Vargas and Fernando Teruel, Senator Ramón Rogelio Genao, Governor Luisa Jiménez de la Mota and Tireo mayor Paul Piña, along with other municipal and provincial officials.

Why it matters

For young athletes and families in Tireo al Medio, the project gives them a covered, equipped space to train and gather.
