The Centro de Atención Integral para la Discapacidad (CAID) has inaugurated a new Territorial Therapeutic Intervention Unit (UITT) in Las Matas de Farfán. The opening is part of the institution's national expansion plan, which seeks to bring its services to more communities across the country.
The unit will focus on early care for children with autism, Down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. According to the institution, the goal is to make specialized services more accessible and reduce the travel barriers for hundreds of families in San Juan and surrounding areas.
During the inauguration, Dr. Fernando Benoit, the CAID's national director, said these units respond to the institution's commitment to take services where they are most needed. He said the UITT is part of the plan of the government of President Luis Abinader to guarantee the well-being of children. Benoit added that these units help cut through waiting lists by bringing care closer to socially vulnerable children.
The UITT model began in 2024 as part of the expansion plan and consists of a network of care points distributed across the country. Each unit will expand its capacity according to the needs of its territory.
To date, the CAID has inaugurated four units. The plan calls for opening eight more in different localities, in coordination with public and community institutions.
Why it matters
Families in San Juan and nearby communities can access specialized care for their children without traveling to the main centers, which may help shorten waiting lists.
