According to El Nacional, Colombian rapper Kevin Wai clarified the remarks that had sparked controversy about his popularity before collaborating with Dominican artist Bulin 47, and apologized to the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and people around the world.
During an interview on the YouTube channel Maiky Backstage, the artist said his words were misinterpreted. He explained that he had some presence before the collaboration, but did not mean he already enjoyed the fame that came after the impact of "Dame Hombro," the song that helped put his name on the map.
Kevin Wai also pointed to cultural differences in how people on the Colombian coast communicate compared with people from other countries, which he believes may have affected how his comments were interpreted.
In the same conversation, the Colombian spoke about the song's royalties. He said he initially did not want any financial benefit from the track, but it was Bulin 47 who insisted he receive his share. The Dominican artist, he explained, did not want him to go through an experience of being cheated out of song rights.
The rapper added that he did not understand how musical percentages and so-called splits worked, so he left it to his colleague to decide what was fair.
Additionally, he spoke about being on the autism spectrum and the attention difficulties he experiences. He said he sometimes interrupts others while they are speaking, though he insisted he does not do it with intent to disrespect them.
With these statements, Kevin Wai aims to ease the discomfort caused by his words and offer his version of a controversy that arose from his musical relationship with Bulin 47.
