How Dominican women can report threats from the U.S. to authorities at home

Receiving death threats from a partner or ex-partner abroad? You can still report them from the Dominican Republic. Here is what officials recommend.

Key points

  • Victims should go to the Dominican Public Prosecutor's Office and keep evidence such as messages, screenshots, audio and call logs.
  • Threats can be reported to the FBI at tips.fbi.gov without traveling to the United States.
  • For online crimes, the FBI's ic3.gov is available.
  • The Ministry of Women offers free guidance 24 hours a day at *212.

Women who receive death threats from a partner or ex-partner living in the United States or another country can report the case to the Dominican Public Prosecutor's Office, even if the alleged aggressor is outside national territory. Luz María Rodríguez, a psychologist with the Ministry of Women, made this recommendation to Diario Libre.

Rodríguez said victims should go to the Prosecutor's Office and present evidence such as text messages, screenshots, call logs and voice notes. She also suggested informing authorities of the aggressor's identity and any information that could help locate him.

According to the same outlet, threats can also be reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) without traveling to U.S. Territory. The FBI portal tips.fbi.gov lets people identify the alleged aggressor and describe the threats. For crimes committed online, ic3.gov is available. According to Diario Libre, the FBI's liaison office in Santo Domingo can be reached at 809-221-2171 and 809-567-7775.

Victims can also go to the specialized units for gender-based and domestic violence. The Ministry of Women offers free guidance at *212, 24 hours a day.

The psychologist said competent institutions must be alerted so they can evaluate protective measures if the accused returns to the country. She explained that alerts can be coordinated with agencies involved in airport controls, though actions will depend on each case.

U.S. Authorities will assess whether they have jurisdiction to investigate. Filing a report does not guarantee an arrest or the automatic opening of a criminal case.

Why it matters

If a Dominican woman is threatened from the United States by a current or former partner, she has ways to file a report without being in the country. Filing a report does not guarantee an arrest or an automatic criminal case.
