The Dominican National Health Service (SNS) has put into operation a modern laparoscopy unit at the Alejandro Cabral Regional Hospital in San Juan de la Maguana. The investment, over 15 million Dominican pesos, covers medical equipment and improvements to the province's health infrastructure.
SNS executive director Dr. Julio Landrón led the equipment handover to the hospital. Among the items is a laparoscopy tower valued at RD$5,871,860.17, which enables minimally invasive surgery. With it, specialists can perform gallbladder removals, appendix operations and certain hernia repairs through small incisions.
According to the agency, this kind of surgery reduces postoperative pain, shortens hospital stays and speeds recovery.
The hospital also received a portable X-ray unit, bought for RD$4,694,889.13. It will allow imaging directly in patient rooms, emergency areas and other units, avoiding unnecessary transfers, especially for patients who have trouble moving.
Equipment for maternal, neonatal and pediatric services, valued at nearly one million pesos, was also delivered, including monitors, pulse oximeters, neonatal scales and humidifiers.
Landrón said these actions reflect the commitment of President Luis Abinader's government to strengthening the Public Health Services Network.
Why it matters
According to the agency, patients in San Juan and nearby communities may get modern surgery without traveling to hospitals in other provinces, when their medical condition allows it.
