PLD lawmakers call vehicle registration tax hike for 2026-2027 abusive

Vehicle owners will pay more for the marbete in the new fiscal period. Two PLD lawmakers say it is a blow to family finances.

Key points

  • The DGII set the marbete at RD$2,000 for vehicles manufactured up to and including 2021.
  • The increase is RD$500 over the previous period.
  • Congressmen Charles Mariotti Paz and Mayobanex Martínez called the adjustment abusive.

The Dominican Directorate General of Internal Revenue (DGII) set, through a resolution, that vehicles manufactured up to and including 2021 will pay RD$2,000 for the marbete, the vehicle circulation tax, for the 2026-2027 period. The increase is RD$500, according to the resolution.

Congressmen Charles Mariotti Paz and Mayobanex Martínez of the Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) called the increase abusive. In separate interviews at the National Congress, both lawmakers agreed that the measure places an additional burden on citizens.

Mariotti Paz argued that the adjustment is another blow to family finances and questioned the government raising its tax revenue at the expense of consumers. "They are taking a thousand pesos more from Dominicans. When we add the increase in fuel, the electricity bill, and the family basic basket, we see that everything is going up," he said.

Martínez, for his part, called the increase disproportionate. "We are seeing this enormous increase. This negatively impacts citizens' wallets," he said.

The adjustment has drawn rejection from community organizations, drivers, lawmakers, and political leaders, who question the increase set for the new fiscal period.

Why it matters

The increase comes amid rising fuel, electricity, and basic-goods prices, which weigh on the wallets of vehicle owners in the Dominican Republic.
