The National Institute of Physical Education (Inefi) handed over a new sports court and sports equipment to Fundación Mir in La Romana. The facility was built entirely by the Inefi and aims to expand space for physical activity and sports practice for the foundation's students.
Inefi executive director Alberto Rodríguez Mella led the handover at an event attended by provincial governor Ivelisse Mercedes Méndez and La Romana mayor Eduardo Kery Métivier. Monique Acevedo González, director general of Fundación Mir's schools, and her legal representative, Sandra Hernández, were also present. According to El Nuevo Diario, provincial sports director Aquiles Pinales and Dominican national basketball team member Andy Williams also attended.
In his speech, Rodríguez Mella praised the social and educational work of the Fanjul family through Fundación Mir and said support for education and sports contributes to the development of children and young people. According to the Presidency, he also congratulated Monique Acevedo for her commitment to education for children in La Romana and across the country.
Rodríguez Mella recalled that Article 65 of the Constitution guarantees the right to physical education, sports and recreation as public health and education policy. That provision will be marked on November 6, the 182nd anniversary of the constitution.
The Inefi also plans to build a covered sports facility at Escuela Batey Central. Diego Guzmán, the agency's coordinator in La Romana, told El Nuevo Diario that the project is in the tender process and that students and community members will be able to use it.
