Dominican artist Dionisio Blanco received the 2026 National Visual Arts Prize, recognizing a career of more than five decades devoted to creating, teaching, and reflecting on art.

Born in San Cristóbal on October 9, 1953, Blanco studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, today the Escuela Nacional de Artes Visuales, from 1970 to 1974, a period in which he was influenced by the master Jaime Colson. He worked in graphic design at the Museo del Hombre Dominicano and the Museo de Historia y Geografía, and did drawing work linked to the restoration of Santo Domingo's Colonial City.

From 1978 to 1996 he taught drawing at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), both in the Department of Arts and in the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. In 1984 he won the Single Drawing Prize at the XVI National Biennial of Visual Arts.

His most representative motif is "El sembrador" (The Sower), rural figures through which he explores the relationship between people, nature, labor, and cultural roots. His characters carry symbolic weight: sowing appears as effort, continuity, and hope.

Blanco has also worked as a sculptor, writer, and art critic. Among his sculptural projects is "Homenaje a la música: homenaje a la tierra. Sembradores en bronce," documented in the catalog of the Biblioteca Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña in 2008. His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in the Dominican Republic and abroad.
