Stellar Blade Hits Switch 2 With 60 FPS Achieved Through Frame Interpolation

Stellar Blade lands on Switch 2 with impressive visuals, but its 60 frames per second rely on a technical trick worth knowing about.

Key points

  • Stellar Blade Complete Edition launches on Nintendo Switch 2 with a single graphics profile.
  • Output resolution is 1080p on TV and 720p in handheld mode.
  • The game starts at 30 FPS and generates intermediate frames to reach 60.
  • NVIDIA DLSS handles upscaling, while AMD FSR 3.1 handles frame interpolation.

The Switch 2 version of Stellar Blade is now available. Vandal's review, based on about 23 hours of play, says the port keeps much of the visual spectacle of the original PlayStation 5 release, though it shows visible differences when compared directly with that console.

Shift Up chose a single graphics profile instead of the quality and performance modes common on other consoles. According to Vandal, the goal is a consistent experience on both the TV and the handheld screen, with output at 1080p on the TV and 720p in handheld mode, using image reconstruction techniques.

To achieve the smooth framerate an action adventure like this needs, the studio combines two technologies. NVIDIA DLSS handles upscaling, while AMD FSR 3.1 applies frame interpolation. According to the review, the game starts from a base of 30 frames per second and generates intermediate frames until reaching 60. These are not 60 natively rendered frames, but a solution that improves perceived smoothness without doubling the workload on the hardware.

This choice makes sense in combat, where players must react to enemy movements and execute blocks or dodges within very tight timing windows. Still, readers should know that the smoothness they perceive is not the same as a game rendered at a true 60 FPS.
