The stealth classic's remaster includes a new campaign and upgraded visuals. Here are the release date, prices and editions.

Key points

  • Launches December 3 for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, Switch 2 and PC
  • Standard edition costs $29.99; Digital Deluxe costs $34.99
  • Includes the new campaign The Tarnished Mirror, made by the team behind The Black Parade

Atari, Nightdive Studios and Eidos-Montréal announced that Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will release December 3 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. On PC it can be bought through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG, and pre-orders are already open on all confirmed platforms.

The standard edition costs $29.99, £24.99 or €29.99. The Digital Deluxe costs $34.99, £28.99 or €34.99 and includes the soundtrack, a journal with material from the remastering process, and a preview of a novel based on the game. Physical editions will be available for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2, distributed by Clear River Games.

The remaster uses KEX Engine, Nightdive Studios' in-house engine, and offers resolutions up to 4K and up to 120 frames per second on compatible devices. Improvements affect textures, character models and animations, while the level design and original mechanics are kept. The controls were also adapted to modern controllers, with vibration, motion or gyroscope controls, trophies, and a radial wheel to select weapons, tools and items more quickly.

The package brings together the 12 missions of the first game and the three additional missions from Thief: Gold. The main addition is The Tarnished Mirror, a new campaign created by the team behind Thief: The Black Parade, one of the best-known fan projects in the series. The story will bridge the first Thief and Thief II: The Metal Age, with new factions, settings and enemies, and horror elements inspired by H. P. Lovecraft. Atari has not detailed the campaign's length or number of missions.

Thief: The Dark Project was developed by Looking Glass Studios and originally released in 1998. The remastered version will also support community-made campaigns, as long as they are compatible with its tools.

Why it matters

For fans of stealth games or owners of a compatible console, the release lets them play the original title with updated graphics. The standard edition costs $29.99.
