Waddys Jáquez Directs "La Ciguapa" and Calls for Rigor in Dominican Arts

Waddys Jáquez, director of "Rent" and other musicals, makes his ballet debut with "La Ciguapa," set to premiere on the 13th of this month at the Teatro Nacional.

Key points

  • Jáquez is directing a ballet for the first time, "La Ciguapa" by Alina Abreu.
  • The show celebrates Alina Abreu's 40 years in dance.
  • The premiere is scheduled for the 13th of this month at the Teatro Nacional.
  • Jáquez says there is "a difference between success and relevance."

Waddys Jáquez is living one of the most intense moments of his career. Between musicals, large-format productions and projects that highlight Dominican identity, he keeps a schedule that takes him constantly between the Dominican Republic and New York, the city where his career began in 1998.

His recent commitments include taking part in Dominicana's Got Talent, directing the musical "Rent," presenting the show "Sin pedir permiso," and producing the artistic side of the Central American and Caribbean Games.

One of those projects is "La Ciguapa," the show with which Alina Abreu celebrates 40 years in dance. Jáquez says it is his first time directing a ballet directly, as until now he had worked mainly in theater and musicals. He describes Abreu as a longtime friend and a great collaborator in Dominican art, and says the two "speak the same language."

The premiere is scheduled for the 13th of this month at the Teatro Nacional. Jáquez hopes the work can reach international companies.

Discussing his career, Jáquez explained that he always seeks to do what he considers meaningful: "I always want to do things that are precise, that I understand will be transcendental for me, because I believe there is a difference between success and relevance."
