Haile Rivera urges Hispanic voters in New York to vote on November 3
Democratic leader Haile Rivera is calling on Dominican and Latino New Yorkers to vote and not be intimidated in the midterm elections.
Key points
- Rivera urges votes for Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James.
- The November 3 midterms will decide control of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
- An MPI report estimates about 980,000 deportations since Trump's second term began.
Democratic political leader and community activist Haile Rivera urged New York's Hispanic community, especially Dominicans, to vote for Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James in the November 3 elections.
Rivera said the midterms will be key to the fight for control of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, as well as governorships, state legislatures and local offices.
According to Rivera, amid the federal government's offensive against immigrants under Donald Trump, it is essential that the community stay united, informed and active. A recent report from the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit research center based in Washington, D.C., found that about 980,000 people have been deported since the start of Trump's second term.
Hochul and James, according to Rivera, have maintained a constant presence in Hispanic communities, which is why he called on voters to back them at the polls. He added that the main challenge remains motivating voters to show up and not be intimidated.
Rivera also stressed that the community's voice matters, that its vote has power, and that its future depends on its participation.
This election will decide all 435 House seats and 35 of the 100 Senate seats, plus governors in 36 states. Some 250 million eligible voters across U.S. Territory will be called to decide the new composition of Congress.
Why it matters
Dominican turnout in New York can shape who controls Congress and state and local offices, at a time of strong pressure on immigrants.
